There may still be no Black Widow solo film on the horizon – but at least we have Captain Marvel.
The Marvel superheroine is flying into theaters on July 6, 2018, the studio announced today.
Though a number of different individuals have taken on the moniker in the comic books, the filmed version will focus on Carol Danvers, formerly known as Ms. Marvel before taking on the Captain Marvel name in 2012.
According to Marvel, Danvers powers include “flight, enhanced strength, durability and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands.” She is also a pilot.
The Captain Marvel news came as part of a larger announcement from a massive Marvel press event held earlier today.
“This film has been in the works almost as long as ‘Doctor Strange’ or ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ before it came out,” President Kevin Feige addressed the crowd today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. “And one of the key things was figuring out what we wanted to do with it. Her adventures are very earthbound, but her powers are based in the cosmic realm.”
She first appeared in the Marvel comics in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1967.
No word on who will play her.
