This list, compiled by CareerBuilder with Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. highlights roles for which a college degree is required and where the jobs posted by companies each month outnumbers the workers employers are able to hire.
“Job creation is gaining ground and job seekers are gaining leverage,” said Matt Ferguson, CareerBuilder CEO. ”For nearly 70 occupations in the U.S, the rate at which workers are being hired isn’t keeping up with the frequency and volume of open positions being advertised. By drawing attention to talent deficits, our list underscores opportunities in everything from technology andhealth care to sales and transportation for job seekers looking to make a change.”
To create the list, CareerBuilder worked with EMSI to analyze the average number of workers hired each month in upwards of 700 occupations between January 2013 and August 2014 compared to the number of online job postings for each of these occupations over the same period. The jobs highlighted here require a college degree.
At the top of the list is Marketing Executive. Each month nearly 35,000 of these positions are posted online, while just 11,617 workers are hired for these roles, on average, for a job that pays a robust $57.42 in median hourly earnings. Next up are Software Applications Developers. Though openings don’t outnumber average hires quite as starkly as in the case of Marketing Executives, there are still 21,084 more posts for these professionals, who earn $44.66 per hour in a job that grew 15% in the past four years, than there are average hires each month.
Registered nurses take spot number three, with nearly 20,000 positions going unfilled each month. Industrial Engineers and Network and Computer System Administrators round out the top five. Professionals in these roles earn median hourly wages in the mid-to-high $30 range, and roughly 17 – 18,000 of both of these positions remain open each month.
Continuing the professional themes of the top five, web developers make the list, as do Medical and Health Services Managers, and Physical Therapists. Speech-Language Pathologists and Sales Managers, who with median hourly earnings of $51.98 bring in the highest wages of any of these 10 professions, round out the top 10.
